The Royal Adelaide Hospital Post Operative Recovery Unit (PARU) in Technical Suites provides a non-invasive High Flow Oxygen therapy to patient’s post operatively.

The purpose of this eLearning tool is to provide staff with the knowledge and skills for the safe provision of High Flow Oxygen for post operative patients and for patients with respiratory complications associated with COVID-19.

This manual has been written to facilitate the daily running of the RAH Intensive Care Unit.  It is by no means the definitive answer to all intensive care protocols and procedures, nor is it designed to be a textbook.

A standardised approach to management is desirable for optimal patient care and safety, improving communication and understanding between members of the ICU team and associated specialties.   This approach provides a common platform for staff who come from different countries and training backgrounds.

The manual outlines various Protocols and Policies, which represent a standard approach to practice within the Unit.  These have been derived from the available literature, clinical experience and where appropriate, cost-effectiveness. Guidelines designed to assist in clinical management are included but patient management will ultimately depend upon the clinical situation. Consultants may modify these guidelines on consideration of the nuances of a particular clinical case. Registrars wishing to go outside the guidelines should discuss this with the Duty Consultant before proceeding.

Assistance on the clinical floor is always available from the Duty Consultant and senior medical and nursing staff.  Use your time in the Unit to get the most out of the large clinical caseload.  Ask questions about clinical problems, equipment and procedures with which you are unfamiliar.  There are numerous textbooks, journals and references available in the Unit.

This manual has undergone numerous changes, with contributions from many of the ICU staff and from other specialty services within the hospital.  The contents of this manual are produced from the consensus views of the senior medical staff. We aim to make the information in this manual as accurate and consistent with the available evidence as possible at the time of publication. However no guarantee can be provided that errors do not exist – please notify the editorial panel (Drs Edwards, Davies and Sundararajan) if you identify any errors of fact or significant omissions.
