The Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) is excited because you are here to make a difference.

Whether you are just starting in public health, returning to CALHN or continuing your career from elsewhere, now is the time to take the opportunity to tell you about our organisation and what makes us tick and what we really value. Whether your role is administrative, allied health, medical, nursing, support or technical, let’s take a pause before we start 'doing' and think, reflect, and consider the bigger picture.

CALHN is the largest public provider of health to the people of South Australia, and our community, like all of us who work here, have high expectations. Our patients, their families and carers are at the heart of the services we provide. We seek their feedback and active participation in shaping how we can deliver results that meet their needs, meeting or exceeding national standards. We work towards connecting care with our partners to wrap holistically around our patients both within our facilities and the community.

We are excited about our future, and are committed to shaping the future of health in South Australia with world-class care and world-class research.

Our biggest asset are our people, and your employment journey begins with belonging to a team. Our teams are passionate and committed, they value diversity and contributors. We are not without challenges, and we believe that together through our shared values, commitment to our employees and the community, we can create a workplace where our people are encouraged and supported to achieve the extraordinary, every day.

neo 1The video below marks the beginning of a learning pathway. Please work through all the steps to ensure you get the right onboarding experience.

Step 1 - Where we are now - provides a bite-sized overview of CALHN, our people and our worksites.

Step 2 - Complete the Getting started course which introduces you to essential core knowledge required for all staff across CALHN. Move on to Code of Ethics course which is required to be completed by all SA Government employees and is a foundation for our CALHN values. Completing the Aboriginal Cultural Learning course is our introduction to sharing an understanding of the beliefs and customs of our indigenous Australians. Cultural competency is important for us as we work closely with the community when they and theirs are at their most vulnerable and stressful. Empathy applies equally to us and our peers as we are a diverse cross-section of the community we serve. There is other awareness training available in the CALHN Cultural Awareness, Diversity & Inclusion Program which we encourage you to complete. If you are working or visiting the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), then please take the time to complete the induction as you will need the certificate to get you security pass from the RAH security desk (more details in the course).

Step 3 - Complete your Mandatory Training (MT). Your MT provides you with important information that you should know, some is related to policies and safety and some is very clinical and related to your role. Whatever the case please make the time to complete it. You will see the links to your MT in your Learning Central dashboard. If you have prior equivalent learning from other organisations or have any online training questions, then submit a ticket via the help menu above and the support team will be happy to help.

Step 4 - You may or may not be in a larger employee intake such as Interns, Trainee Medical Officers or Graduate Nurses. If this applies to you, then you will be undertaking a specialised induction and orientation to CALHN as it relates to your profession. The Medical or Nursing Administration teams will be in contact to advise of locations and times.

Step 5 - The last but one of the most important steps is to be orientated to your local worksite by your line manager (or delegate). This is when you will meet some co-workers, know where to go for meals and breaks, be advised of any workplace hazards and many other things including the opportunity to ask questions on anything you might want to know.

The Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) is excited because you are here to make a difference.

Our Nurses are the foundation of our community, planning and providing quality medical and nursing care to our patients who are being treated for chronic or acute physical or mental ill health.

Welcome to SA Dental – we are excited because you are here to make a difference to the oral health of South Australians

SA Dental has been a leader in oral health for over 50 years and supports individuals to improve their oral health by providing dental care to eligible adults and all kids.

SA Dental is the leader in policy, advocacy, education, and health promotion to improve oral health for all South Australians, with a specific focus on increasing equity in oral health for priority population groups.

SA Dental works in partnership with the University of Adelaide to educate and train many of the States dental professionals.

Our organisation consists of two clinical streams:

  1. Statewide Dental Services (SWDS) – comprises adult and kids dental services as its two core programs as well as private sector schemes, remote dental services and attraction and retention of clinic staff. SWDS has over 35 clinics in both metropolitan and country locations.
Some clinics are located in hospitals or community health centres, whilst others are located on school grounds or discrete dental facilities.
  2. The Adelaide Dental Hospital (ADH) – comprises six speciality dental services, general and emergency services, and provides infection control leadership.
Under the arrangements with the University of Adelaide, we provide up to 90 undergraduate chairs across our clinics for students to undertake their clinical placement.

The Corporate Services and Service Quality and Performance Improvement stream support these two clinical streams.

The South Australian Oral Health Plan 2019-2026 is the South Australian Government framework for oral health action in South Australia for the next seven years. It provides an overview of the current oral health status of South Australians, including priority populations, and identifies key action areas to address the oral health needs of the population

Welcome to our Cultural Awareness, Diversity and Inclusion package on Learning Central.

Diversity includes a mix of backgrounds, characteristics, experiences, and perspectives, and CALHN is committed to celebrating diversity and fostering an inclusive work environment for all.

Despite a growing awareness of the importance of a diverse and inclusive workplace, there is still evidence to suggest that not everyone feels accepted, supported, and treated equitably at work. Further, there still exists inequalities in the health outcomes of minority groups, as well as barriers to the accessibility and appropriateness of care. Increasing our diversity and inclusion awareness and competence is key to reducing inequalities in healthcare access and improving the quality and effectiveness of care provided. It is also key to building a safe and positive work environment for us all, regardless of identity, ability, cultural background or age.

Welcome to Infection Prevention Hub

It is important for all healthcare workers to understand the importance of infection prevention and control and their individual contribution to preventing the spread of infection. Healthcare associated infections (HAI) are a major cause of poor outcomes for patients. Research shows that a significant proportion of infections can be prevented by adherence to established infection control practices.

Strategies for the prevention and control of HAIs include:

  • Implementation of standard and transmission-based precautions
  • Following the 5 moments of hand hygiene
  • Maintaining aseptic technique
  • Indwelling medical device management
  • Maintaining clean equipment and environment

CALHN IPCU also provides information and fact sheets for clinical staff and the consumer (link on intranet) on the principles of infection prevention.

The online modules listed below will help you understand the importance of Infection Prevention and Control.

Please note : In addition to these modules you will have to complete Aseptic Technique 5 yearly certification and Hand Hygiene Clinical annual certification. Since they are ongoing certifications they are not listed in the program.
