Advancement of technology has resulted in new electronic medical record (EMR) systems being introduced into hospitals, which have changed workflow practices. There are concerns that these changes may contribute to errors in transfusion.
The Clinical Transfusion Practice Refresher 2 (EMR) is for healthcare professionals who prescribe, order and transfuse patients in a hospital that has, or intends to implement EMR systems.
The course is based on a case study and covers the principles of safe transfusion practice as well as outlining safe precautions when using EMR systems.
On completion of this course you should be able to state the processes and the necessary precautions required when using EMRs and associated technologies when:
- documenting informed consent and the decision to transfuse
- ordering blood products
- collecting and labelling blood specimens
- picking up blood for a patient
- checking that the right patient receives the right product
- recognising, responding and reporting transfusion reactions.
In order to access this course you must have successfully completed the Clinical Transfusion Practice course at least once. This Refresher course assumes you have background knowledge that you can apply to clinical scenarios in order to answer the multiple-choice assessment questions.
This course is based on current clinical guidelines, evidence-based material and/or expert consensus opinion, and has been developed in collaboration with leading transfusion medicine experts in Australia. It is regularly updated as changes to guidelines or accepted practice occurs.
Estimated time to complete this course: One hour.
