Patient Blood Management (PBM) is individualised and evidence-based care that has been shown to improve patient outcomes and reduce unnecessary use of blood products.

PBM is not limited to one clinical specialty or discipline, it improves clinical outcomes for all patients. Therefore, staff working with medical, surgical, critical care, obstetric and paediatric patients will benefit from this elearning course.

This course aims to provide an overview for healthcare professionals to understand the principles of patient blood management, why it is important and to consider practice changes to improve patient care.

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  • define patient blood management
  • explain why patient blood management is important
  • apply patient blood management principles to current practice.

This course is based on current clinical guidelines, evidence-based material and/or expert consensus opinion, and has been developed in collaboration with leading transfusion medicine experts in Australia. It is regularly updated as changes to guidelines or accepted practice occurs.
