Welcome
This is a CALHN Vascular Access Specialty Course and is part of the CALHN Vascular Access Program. The Fundamentals of Vascular Access course is assumed knowledge for this course. The aim of this course is to provide you with the fundamental skills and knowledge required for accreditation in Venepuncture.
Learning Intentions
On successful completion of the Venepuncture Course:
- Awareness of CALHN and SA Health policies and procedures related to Venepuncture
- Safely perform blood collection via a peripheral vein to gain a quality venous blood specimen for laboratory testing and document a blood specimen using Sunrise
- Apply the principles of SA Pathology "Order Of Draw"
- Awareness of potential complications associated with Venepuncture
Pre-Requisites
- Completion of Fundamentals of Vascular Access course.
- Active certification for both Hand Hygiene Training and Aseptic Technique Theory
- Assumed knowledge of relevant Anatomy and Physiology, Safe Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Safety Learning System Training
Intended Participants - Nursing staff wishing to undertake a Venepuncture accreditation
Estimated Course Time - Approximately 45 minutes
Assessment Type - Blended online, practical training and competency assessment in the workplace
Frequency - Once-off training, designed to be accessible for review as needed by the learner
