Totally Implanted Vascular Access Device (TIVAD)

Welcome

This is a CALHN Vascular Access Specialty Course and is part of the CALHN Vascular Access Program. The Fundamentals of Vascular Access module is assumed knowledge for this course. This learning resource will discuss the management of Totally Implanted Vascular Access Devices (TIVADs). 


Learning Intentions

On successful completion of Totally Implanted Vascular Access Devices (TIVADs) (previously known as ports, infusaports, implanted venous ports, portacaths) the learner will be able to:

  • Define a TIVAD and utilise correct terminology
  • Gain greater knowledge, understanding and clinical skills in the management of a TIVAD, including accessing and deaccessing
  • Explain key principles including the assessment, education, accessing/deaccessing and troubleshooting
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of TIVADs


Prerequisites


Intended Participants:
 Nursing staff who require port competency as part of their role

Estimated Course Time: Approximately 30 minutes online learning

Assessment Type: Online & Structured practical assessment

Frequency: Once-off training, designed to be accessible for review as needed by the learner
